Drum Audition

Your audition is a way of you showing us what you can do- not us highlighting what you cannot do yet! Please prepare accordingly and try not to let nerves get in the way of your performance.

The drum tutor taking you through your audition will ask you to demonstrate knowledge and skill in the following areas:

  • Rudiments: single stroke roll, double stroke roll, single paradiddle
  • Grooves and styles: Basic 8 beat rock style, 16 beat, jazz/swing beat, reggae/ska

Applicant’s choice piece: Please prepare one piece to perform which showcases your musicality and technique. It is far better to play an intermediate level piece that you can perform well, rather than to choose something hard that you might struggle with.

N.B: There are pieces available for solo drum kit through the Rock School syllabus. Alternatively, you could play a piece that features the drums significantly, OR play your own ‘drum solo’ of approximately 2-3 minutes during which you work your way around the kit, using dynamics and varying techniques

You will be expected to bring your sticks/brushes (plus cymbals and snare if you prefer to use your own).

A full kit will be provided. Please bring your own backing track with you if you need it for your own choice piece.

Good luck, and have fun preparing.
