My Background
Steve Ryan has been an FE and HE Principal in music education for almost two decades, he is passionate about the transformative power of music and education for both individuals and communities.
This combined with lived experience of being a professional musician and and songwriter for over 40 years give him a unique and valuable perspective on the difficult challenges faced by today’s modern musicians.
Professionally performing as Rev Hammer, he has released 8 studio albums including the award -winning Freeborn John song cycle. He received a Gold disc for 100,000 sales of the song Maid of the River, recorded by the Levellers and in March 2023 received a Heritage Chart Number 1 for the song Down by the River O.
With a detailed understanding of the of UK’s musical landscape he is dedicated to removing barriers to accessing music, arts, and life-long learning.
