My Background

Tom is a highly experienced HE lecturer and tutor for from Foundation Degree through to Postgraduate levels; He has covered a range of subjects including Composition, Performance, Ensemble Studies, Musiciology (especially Popular) and Music Theory. In recent years, his educational practice has had a particular focus on collaborative work, leading to a greater emphasise on facilitation, as well as established methods of direct instruction. Additionally, Tom has successfully supervised multiple major research projects at Levels 6 and 7. His artistic background is as a Composer- Percussionist spanning nearly 25 years, straddling and fusing Rock, Classical, and Contemporary styles. Through this practice, Tom has toured extensively through Europe and North America, as well as working on many recordings. Additionally, he has been a long time contributer to the modern Persian music scene in Europe, including working as an MD for multiple BBC World Service live productions. His research interests centre around developing the role of percussion and the percussionist, developing extended score-writing and instrumental techniques, and the study of subcultures within heavy metal
